Iraqi Converts to Christianity

This short Al Jezeera video is interesting. It has the same disdainful attitude to evangelicalism as much of the British media, which is rather interesting.

It would be interesting to know more about the historic Iraqi church and their relationship to these new movements. There is just one short comment which may, or may not, be representative.

While on the subject of persecution, Justin Long has just posted an analysis of the scale of persecution of Christians worldwide, he concludes by saying:

The church worldwide lives in an age of incredible freedom and incredible growth. Yes, large numbers of Christians are persecuted and even martyred—but then, there are more Christians to persecute and kill. The number of people who confess to be Christians has exploded from 209 million in 1800 to 2 billion today. The number of church attenders has grown from 180 million in 1800 to 1.4 billion today. The number of Evangelicals has grown from 25 million in 1800 to 259 million today. This is remarkable growth!

Those under persecution understand: Yes, some churches have been attacked. Yes, some Christians have been killed. But this is really only a very small part of a much larger story—and we should give thanks for the larger story, while reaching out to help and stand with those who have been hurt in this sometimes painful process of reaching a fallen, broken world that has been stabbed and smashed by the vicious hatred of the Evil One, Satan, and those under his influence.
