Colossians Commentaries

In December I’ll be giving four talks on Colossians at a conference in Asia. What would people advise as good commentaries to use in preparation?

I’ve just printed the whole text out from Bible Gateway and will be reading, re-reading and annotating the pages, but it would be good to have some suggestions for reference and devotional works that can help me in preparation. Suggestions in the comments please.

Colossians Remixed: Subverting the Empire (Brian J. Walsh and Sylvia C. Keesmaat) will make a thought-provoking read. I have vague memories of enjoying Dunn’s commentary.

First choice from my shelf: Peter O’Brien in the Word Biblical Commentary. Also Ben Witherington’s volume on Philemon, Colossians and Ephesians.

By way of a general comment on commentaries, I find a couple of resources helpful. One is the Commentary Guides updated every few years by IVP (NT by Don Carson, OT by Tremper Longman). The other is the website Best Commentaries. The IVP guides give scholarly views, Best Commentaries more of a consumer’s view.
