The Shifting Centre of Gravity

I’ve often written about the shifting centre of gravity of the world church, but I could probably have saved myself at least a thousand words by posting this map that I found on twitter.

World ChurchThe picture was provided by Conrad Hackett and you can see the full thing either by clicking on the map itself or by clicking here.

Edit: I am grateful to David Reimer for providing me with information about the source of the map:

This comes from the Pew Foundation.

The original map accompanies a 19 December 2011report on Global Christianity. See also their interactive map feature.

So I have to ask, does Canada not figure in the map anywhere? Who made this thing? Must have been an American [tongue planted firmly in cheek].

Oh, it’s there! The 7 little darker blue squares to the north in 1910, and 23 darker blue squares in the 2010 map. (Matching the blue of Mexico to the south.)

But possibly you knew that already. 😉 With one “square” representing 1,000,000 people, Canada was was inevitably going to be dwarfed…

Yeah, I eventually figured out it must have been something like that. I think we Canadians (as nice as we all must be!) have a bit of an inferiority complex.
