More on Carson and the Emerging Church

Almost a year ago, I wrote a review of Carson’s book on the Emerging Church. At the time, i wasn’t too impressed by the book which seemed to imply that any new forms of church life would inevitably unorthodox in their theology. However, anyone who is even slighlty au fait with the emerging scene knows that there are plenty of people involved whose theology would stand up to the most rigorous of orthodox scrutiny. There is an interesting post on Andrew Hamilton’s website about a discussion between Don Carson and some emerging church leaders in Australia. Hammo (he’s Australian, so has to have a nickname that ends in “o” – I think it’s a law downunder!) described the theological positions of the people in the discussion as:

We share similar but also different theological positions, however the common ground would be a comitment to orthodoxy and the central tenets of the faith.

If you are interested in the emerging church discussion, then this makes a good and neccesary read. If you are not interested in it, then read the article anyway. If our church is to make an impact on western society, we are going to need to seriously rethink many of the cultural values that bind us together. The emerging church guys are some of the few people that I see thinking seriously about this.

Andrew has posted a number of other comments on the Carson conversation, you can find these by scrolling up on the page of his blog or following the links on his sidebar.
