Holiday Reading

It will be a few weeks yet before we have our annual pilgrimage to the Lake District, but I’m already gathering a little pile of books that I want to read while we are away. I can’t actually recommend these because I’ve not read them (or at least not finished them – I have started a couple) but this is some of what I plan to read:

I did also treat myself to a copy of D-Day: The Battle for Normandy by Antony Beevor, but I wasn’t able to resist reading it, so I’m about half way through it now and it probably won’t make it on holiday.

If you are looking for a recommendation for some holiday reading, there is one book that I have read so far this year that stands out above all of the others. Kingdom Without Borders: The Untold Story of Global Christianity by Mirian Adeney is an absolutely stunning book (see more details here). The whole book gives an excellent overview of the situation of the Church in the world today. It is good holiday reading because it takes you on a trip around the world – without the inconvenience of long queues for airport security checks. The basis of the book is lots of short stories, which add up to a superb overall picture. Because the stories are short, they make good beach reading – they are gripping enough to keep your attention, but not so long that you have to keep reading for hours before you can safely put the book down. All in all, it is a very good investment.
