Holiday Reading: Fiction

Well, we are back from holiday and I’ve got a lot of blogging to catch up with. But, I’ll kick off with the easy stuff – a quick mention for the fiction books I read while in the Lake District.

The Genesis Secret. Don’t bother. This is yet another sub-Da Vinci Code novel trying to demythologise the Bible. It really isn’t worth the bother.

Avenger. (Frederick Forsyth) Like every other novel by Forsyth, this one sets out with three objectives; the first is to show you how much the author knows, the second is to promote his right-wing political views and the third is to entertain. The story isn’t bad, but the other bits get in the way. If you have never read a Forsyth book, then give this one a go on a long flight or train journey. But if you’ve ever read anything else by him, this will seem all too familiar, so don’t bother.

So far, my three for the price of two novels wasn’t much of a success. However, the third novel was absolutely excellent. If you enjoy the Inspector Lindley novels, you will not be disappointed with this one. As ever, there were multiple side plots, complex characters and believable scenarios. You won’t find fast cars, guns and helicopters here, but if you want a thoroughly satisfying, if rather bleak, story this is the one to get.

I have to admit that the end was a bit of a let down, partly because I didn’t want the book to end, but mainly because the ending was rather odd – but don’t let that put you off.

If you’ve not read any Eizabeth George, you really should give her a go, though I wouldn’t start with this one, which is the fourteenth in the series.  On a linguistic note, I’m always very impressed that an American can write so convincingly about the United Kingdom – I just wish she would remember that professional titles change across the Atlantic; since when did a Brit call themselves a Vet

since when did a Brit call themselves a Vet? I think veterinarians do that but NOT veterans!
