A really unhelpful footnote!

During last night’s sermon I was amused to read the NIV footnote for 2 Corinthians 6:15:

2 Corinthians 6:15 Greek Beliar, a variant of Belial

Just how many readers of the NIV would worry about that one letter change in Greek? And how many readers would know what either Belial or Beliar means in any case? I can see why you would highlight this in a text designed for academics, but I don’t understand it in a Bible designed for popular readership. Belial or Beliar is a Greek name for Satan: why didn’t the footnote say that and explain things to us?
