Languages

Working in a language focussed organisation means that I get the opportunity to hear lots of different languages. I’m at a conference this morning and managed to greet someone who works in Mali with my few words of Bambara and I regularly speak to a French colleague in her own language. Living in Southampton I hear a lot of what I suspect is Polish in the shops and on the streets. However, the most surprising thing that has happened to me in the recent past is when a friendly Irish lady in a COOP shop in Belfast addressed me in Japanese. I have about three words of the language and I used all of them at least twice. It was fun, but I’m still unsure why she chose to use Japanese with me – Kouya would have done much better!
