Airline Staff Can’t Carry Bibles

There has been a lot of storm in the UK about a BA check in staff member who was forbidden to wear a crucifix with her uniform. However, there seems to have been less attention paid to a far more serious offence to Christians made by another British airline. BMI have banned their employees from taking Bibles with them when they are on flights to Saudi Arabia. Apparently staff must respect Saudi religious traditions – though BMI shows no sign of wanting to respect the religious views of their own employees. Those who don’t like this rule (and a number of others enforced on those flying to Saudi) can transfer to domestic flights losing a good deal of money in the process.

I can understand BA not wanting people to wear no-standard jewellery (including crucifixes) with their uniforms. It’s a little insensitive, perhaps, but understandable. But there can be no excuse for disallowing believers from carrying their Bibles in their baggage so that they can read them in the quiet and privacy of their hotel rooms.

I, for one, will be avoiding BMI in the future.
