Ivorian News Sources
As the situation in Ivory Coast limps along with two presidents and two governments jostling for power, it becomes increasingly difficult to tell what exactly is going on in the country. It isn’t difficult to come across highly biased and more or less hysterical blog posts and Facebook pages which describe the situation from one side or another. For what it’s worth, I’ve come across three sources of news that I find worth following up on:
- Global Voices: It is hard to speak too highly of this excellent source of news. I subscribe to all of their articles on Ivory Coast and they provide me with a lot of good thought provoking reading coupled with challenging analysis.
- Until Our Independence: this is a one man blog with lots of good links to articles in the press and blogsphere. There are some interesting original articles too which are well worth a read.
- Twitter: OK, this is the source for most of the hysterical and biased articles that I come across. However, if you filter out the extremism, you can get a good picture of what is going on from both sides of the coin. The link I’ve given goes straight to the Ivory Coast Election hashtag (#civ2010) and you will find that much of the stuff there is in French. Not only that, but it’s in French internet slang which you might find difficult at first kwoi.
If anyone else has come across reliable news sources that cut across the political divide in the country, I’d be glad to hear about them in the comments.
