What is the Emerging Church

A while ago, I reviewed D.A. Carson’s book Becoming Conversant with the Emerging Church. At the time, I was not particularly impressed with what Carson had to say (and I’m still not). There is a much better analysis of the Emerging Church, written by an insider, available here. (Thanks to Mark at Foolish Sage for making the article available online). I think this paper should be read by all thinking Evangelicals because it asks some hard questions about the way in which we view our faith and do our theology. Try this quote for size:

The emerging movement is perhaps annoyed more by Bible thumpers and Christians who are obsessed with being biblical than anything else – not because they disparage the Bible but because they know too many Christians whose theology is all that matters to them, who render judgement on everything and everyone – with Bible verses to back it up – but who don’t live compassionately (and sometimes we mention names) and who don’t live out Micah 6:8 – “To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with
your God.”

Thanks for the emerging church resource. I’ve been trying to understand them for months.

And the article on ‘What is the Purpose of Bible Teaching’ was great. It rings very true to me. One of our cupporting churches worships the Bible rather than God (almost).
