What is the Bible?

I was doing a short session for one of the ETP translation courses this morning and I had the group think through the question of what the Bible is. After a number of questions and a little prompting they came up with the definition below. I think it’s rather cool.

The recorded story of God’s engagement with humanity in order to reconcile creation to himself through the Son.

What are your thoughts about it? How does this definition of Scripture affect our approaches to translation?

I like it but it seems to leave out the very important issue of the divine authorship and authority of the Bible. Much has been recorded on the same subject outside of the pages of the Bible.

Divine authorship? I thought that Moses, and Paul and… were the authors (sorry, couldn’t resist that). I agree it leaves out inspiration though.
