If you believe that you have a call to be a missionary, you have to ask yourself whether or not you are willing to deny yourself and to take up your cross daily. If not, you’d better stay at home. But be aware, the same standard is demanded of disciples wherever they find themselves.
Some are indeed … called to commerce, to industry and farming, to accountancy and banking, to local government or parliament, and to the mass media, to homemaking and family building.

It’s not that I think we should pray for persecution, – I’m too much of a coward for that – but I do think that we should pray to be a church that is worth the bother of persecuting!

Churches, agencies and individuals involved in mission work have to deal with the fact that mission involves putting people in harm’s way. If we can’t cope with that, then we should do something else.
The lie creeps in when we start to believe that because we received salvation, then everything will be plain sailing from there on in. The road to heaven will be paved with happiness, peace and prosperity. This is a dreadful lie, but the materialism and comfort of the Western world in our generation has made it a plausible lie.
